The basic frame of this piece is created using tin, which is powder coated with a black finish. The frame is reinforced using tin wire along the inner edge. The front of the body is adorned with capiz. Capiz is an oyster shell and the primary purpose of the oyster is as a source of food. However, the by-product, the shell, can be used for decoration. Due to it being a natural material, the natural colors of the capiz may come through as tans and browns underneath the hand-painted surface.
Our products are made using materials that are sustainably harvested, use non-toxic dyes, and water-based finishes. Additionally, we view ourselves as partners with our artists. We continuously exchange ideas on how to improve production, product quality, and the health and well-being of the makers that work to create the products we sell. We visit our artisan groups on a regular basis to ensure that our core mission is being followed.
The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color, size and design. If buying two of the same items, slight differences should be expected. Note: Color discrepancies may occur between this product and your computer screen.
Red eyed tree frogs are one of the most iconic tree frogs in the world. They are considered to be the unofficial ambassador to anything related to rain forests. The frogs are known for their big red eyes. Those large eyes are important for this nocturnal creature to navigate at night as it hunts its prey. Another adaptive feature are its large suction cupped feet, allowing it to get just about anywhere. During the day the red eyed tree frog pulls its body tightly together, making it look just like any other leaf in the forest. The artist uses capiz shell to mimic the reflective nature of the red eyed tree frog. The artist doesn't deviate from nature by carefully painting this sculpture to match the real animal.
